Richard Abell is the co-founder of Based Upon. 21 years into our journey we present to the world as Based Upon the Artist and Studio Based Upon.
The Artist’s organizing principle is the meaningful translation of essence into form. The Studio’s is the mastery of materiality and making. If the artist is spirit then the studio is matter. We segment them because while they support each other they thrive being able to honor their own guiding principle.
Studio Based Upon is our collective of artists, engineers, designers, and artisans creating and constructing bespoke architectural surfaces, furniture and sculptural objects grounded by meticulous workmanship and rich materiality.
Our London-based studio designs and manufactures masterful pieces, from intricate wall panelling to radical furniture to epic elemental features, that inspire, elevate, and offer meaningful moments of reflection.
